Kaum eine sozialwissenschaftliche Studie über moderne wohlfahrtsstaatliche Regime versäumt es, auf die Zunahme sozialer Ungleichheit in ihren unterschiedlichen Ausprägungen hinzuweisen. Auch in der politischen Agenda ist Armut als Thema und Gegenstand politischer Interventionen anerkannt. Politisch immer noch nicht anerkannt sei jedoch - so die Herausgeberinnen - der Zusammenhang von Armut und Ernährung, so als ob die gegenwärtigen Wohlfahrtsgesellschaften jede Erinnerung an Armutsfolgen, die üblicherweise dem Zeitalter der Industrialisierung zugeschrieben werden, von sich abweisen müßten. Im Zentrum des Sammelbandes, der auf eine 1995 an der TU München veranstaltete Tagung zurückgeht, stehen die armutsbedingten Auswirkungen auf das individuelle Ernährungsverhalten in unterschiedlichen Situationen sozialer Ausgrenzung. Gerade weil die zumeist kurzen Beiträge diese Fragestellung an einem thematisch weiten Spektrum durchspielen, können sie den internen Zusammenhang von "Power, Food and Nutrition" plausibel machen.
