Der Sammelband geht zurück auf die Abschlußkonferenz (King's College, London 1992) in einer Serie von Tagungen, die wiederum auf einem Forschungsprojekt von René Girault (Paris I) basierte. Darin wurde der machtpolitische Niedergang Westeuropas zwischen 1938 und 1958 untersucht. Während die früheren Tagungen, deren Ergebnisse auch alle veröffentlicht sind, Teilaspekte des Oberthemas abhandelten, wurde in London noch einmal die gesamte Thematik in den Blick genommen und ein Ausblick auf die sechziger Jahre gegeben.
